Dr.Primavera obtained her PH.D. in Marine Science from the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City. She was born in Agusan del Norte on the southern island of Mindanao, where she also taught biology and zoology courses at the Mindanao State University in Marawi City after graduating from college

. In 1975 she joined the Aquaculture Department of the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC AQD) based in Tigbauan, Iloilo in central Philippines. Her first decade of research was focused on penaeid shrimp aquaculture, in particular, broodstock development and extensive grow-out systems. Observing some negative environmental and socioeconomic impacts of shrimp farming, she was among the first to ring warning bells on the perils of modern aquaculture. Since then, her research has expanded to the shrimp-mangrove fisheries linkage and the development of mangrove-friendly aquaculture. Her almost four decades of academic and research experience have produced more than 40 scientific articles and review papers in national and international journals (including Nature) and proceedings, and 20 manuals, book chapters, technical reports and other publications where she is senior author, and another 20 papers which she has co-authored. Despite a busy career, attendance in over 60 scientific conferences, symposia and workshops on aquaculture, fisheries, mangroves and the environment, and international consultancy work, she has reared a daughter and three sons, now grown-up, with the full support of her husband Nick.
