Dr. G. I. Hemre graduated B.Sc. (Cand Mag) in 1985, and M.Sc. (Cand Scient.) in 1987, from the University of Bergen (Norway). Her Ph.D. studies (Institute of Nutrition, Directorate of Fisheries, Bergen, Norway, 1992) concerned carbohydrate nutrition in Atlantic cod, evaluating retention, protein sparing, digestibility and secondary stress metabolism.
Since 1991 Dr. G. I. Hemre has been working as a senior scientist at the Institute of Nutrition, mainly focussing on the Atlantic salmon's ability to utilise dietary carbohydrates. Additionally research has elucidated interactions between macro-nutrients and their effect on digestibility, feed utilisation and fillet quality in Atlantic salmon, vitamin A and E during gonad development in cod, and net-pen held mackerel's ability to utilise high-energy diets to increase body weight and lipid deposition. The possible utilisation of marine fish-feed resources for direct production of feed without using fish meal or oil, has also been focussed.
A professor acceptance was given in 1999 based on her focus in fish nutrition in general.
She is now Head of Fish Nutrition and Quality research group at INDF (Institute of Nutrition, Directorate of Fisheries).
