Director of Research at the Institute of Marine Research (Stockholm, Sweden) from 1966 until 1976. In 1977 he was appointed Professor in ecological zoology, University of Stockholm. Fellow of the Swedish Royal Academy of Agriculture and Forestry (1989). Presently Chairman of the Fishing and Aquaculture committee.

After his Ph.D. thesis on the ecology of zooplankton in the Baltic, he has published about 250 papers in zooplankton ecology, fisheries biology, environmnetal issues and aquaculture. Latterly has dealt with issues on fisheries management and coastal zone management. In aquaculture, he focussed his studies on environmental impact of aquaculture and more recently on legislation and Codes of Conduct and Codes of Practice. Over the last 15 years he has also spent much time on freshwater crayfish in Europe and particularly the noble crayfish, Astacus astacus. His main interest has been the nutritional requirements of crayfish.

He has had several assignmnents abroad as at OECD, FAO, CGIAR and at Asian Development Bank. Other international engagements: expert at the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) since 1967; chairman Mariculture Committee, 1991-1993; President European Aquaculture Society, 1986-88; Chairman subcommission 2 within EIFAC 1996-1998; assignments as associate editor for two journals etc.
